My Story

Hi, I'm Kate!

I'm a silversmith, sun chaser and stone collector, currently creating jewellery from my little home studio amongst the palm trees in Sayulita, Mexico.

But my life wasn’t always like this.

For years, I watched other people live creatively and thought that kind of freedom was for other people. I actually felt lost for most of my 20’s. Working dead end jobs to save money to travel and had no idea where my life was headed.

Then I sadly lost someone very special to me. She was the kind of person who inspired everyone around her, and losing her made me question everything.

Was I living the life I wanted?

The answer was a definite no. So I started changing it.

I remembered how I felt when I took that first jewellery making class in Thailand a few years before. I remember how it lit up my soul.

So in Jan 2018 I took a 4 day course in London, bought myself some tools and started making jewellery whenever I could. Something had sparked within me, and for the first time I let myself wonder whether creativity could become more than just something I did on the side.

In honour of my dear friend, who unknowingly encouraged me to chase my dreams, Soul and Sapphire was born.

Her soul had inspired me and sapphire was her birthstone.

I like to believe she's been quietly guiding me ever since. A little reminder to trust my intuition, follow the signs and keep choosing the life that feels right, even when I don't quite know where it's leading me.

Then in 2020, the universe gave me a sign.

I was working as a personal assistant in London when I was told, due to covid, they were letting me go. With a month left at work, I started sitting in the sunshine photographing my collection of stones and sharing them on Instagram.

People started asking me to turn them into jewellery.

One order became another, then another.

By the time I left my boring office job, I had two months of full-time jewellery work waiting for me.

I never went back.

Since then, this little business has taken me further than I ever imagined.

I travelled to Mexico and fell in love. I moved across the world. Became a mama. Married a fellow jeweller. And somehow created the life that once felt like it was reserved for other people.

These days you'll usually find me drinking coffee at my bench, covered in silver dust, surrounded by stones I've collected on our travels, with jungle noises outside with the occasional iguana watching me work.

I still make everything slowly, in small batches, with my own two hands.

Because Soul & Sapphire was never about building the biggest jewellery business I could.

It was about having the courage to build a life I actually wanted to live.

And maybe inspiring someone else to do the same.

Thank you for reading,

All my love, Kate x

My London Studio

What a beautiful opportunity to have this video made for me in my London studio, Feb 2021, by the wonderful Aleisha Digby.

I lived and worked in this space. A place I’ll never forget because it was during the years that changed the world. I was so grateful for this area to dedicate to not only my craft but my well-being too. I think being surrounded by nature really kept me sane during the pandemic. I also, luckily, had my beautiful friends living in the main house so it really was the best of both worlds. So grateful I have this beautiful piece of art to remember how lucky I really was.
